Letter to a Tutor About Leaving an Evening Course — IELTS General Training Writing Task 1

General Training B · Writing Task 1

You work full time and cannot continue a part-time evening course. Write to the course tutor describing your situation, explaining the difficulty and saying what action you would like to take. Make the requested action easy to understand.

Practice target: 150+ words in about 20 minutes.

Open the task and write your response

Plan your response

  1. Identify the course and your reason for writing in the opening paragraph. Use a polite formal or semi-formal tone appropriate for a tutor.
  2. Explain the conflict between your work and study commitments using a small number of relevant details. Connect those details to why continuing is not possible at this time.
  3. State a clear request, such as permission to withdraw or to defer to a later session. Do not assume a refund, transfer or administrative policy that the task has not supplied.
  4. Include an appropriate closing and check all three bullet points. Write at least 150 words; the supplied learner sample is not a target length or a verified band benchmark.

Planning example

A clear paragraph plan is purpose and course details, explanation of the work conflict, and a specific request for the tutor to consider. If you ask to return in a later term, make that request explicit rather than merely saying that the course is difficult.

This is original planning guidance, not a full sample answer or a promised band score. Compare any supplied sample critically and check it against the task requirements.
