Rubbish Production: Causes and Government Solutions — IELTS General Training Writing Task 2

General Training B · Writing Task 2

The essay asks why more rubbish is being produced and what governments can do to reduce it. Both parts need developed answers. A discussion of environmental damage alone does not explain the causes or propose suitable action.

Practice target: 250+ words in about 40 minutes.

Open the task and write your response

Plan your response

  1. Choose a small number of causes you can explain, such as excessive packaging, convenience products or frequent replacement of usable goods. Show how each cause increases waste.
  2. Connect government measures to those causes. For instance, a measure addressing packaging should explain how it changes the behaviour of producers, shops or consumers.
  3. Evaluate practical limits or conditions where useful. A recycling proposal needs to consider access and participation; simply naming recycling does not explain how the policy would work.
  4. Use an introduction, connected body paragraphs and a conclusion that answers both questions. Write at least 250 words and use focused examples without invented statistics.

Planning example

A coherent plan might pair a cause paragraph on disposable packaging with a solutions paragraph on reducing unnecessary packaging and improving collection systems. Explain the mechanism linking the policy to less waste, rather than listing fines, education and recycling without development.

This is original planning guidance, not a full sample answer or a promised band score. Compare any supplied sample critically and check it against the task requirements.
