Book 5 Reading Test 2 · Passage 3 · Questions 28–40
This guide reviews the adapted questions on this website. Wording and answers can differ from the original paper.
The passage traces the movement from Latin towards English as a language for scientific communication. It connects language choice with secrecy, audience, scientific institutions and industrial development. The chronology matters because English did not become dominant in one uninterrupted step.

How to approach this passage
- Build a language-and-period timeline. Identify when Latin was useful, when English gained support and when other European languages became prominent.
- For Questions 30–31, the supplied text identifies two limitations of English: technical vocabulary and grammatical resources. These two answers are accepted in either order in the adapted checker.
- Distinguish a book title from a category of work. The table asks for the name Principia, rather than a longer description of Newton's mathematical treatise.
- In the final table, Question 38 asks for the type of science in English: popular. Question 39 asks for the Latin example, and Question 40 for the English readership. Use no more than two words.
Worked review example
For Question 40, local completes the contrast between a socially wider audience and a geographically more limited one. Wider does not mean international in this sentence: the two descriptions concern different dimensions of the audience.
Common mistake to avoid
Do not include an explanatory phrase around a short answer. For example, Principia alone satisfies its title gap; adding unrelated description can break the word limit.
