How to approach this passage

  1. Read the paragraph letters before starting. Questions 1–4 use paragraph letters. Questions 5–10 use programme labels A–D, which have different meanings.
  2. Use concrete anchors to locate information: 1965 identifies the Headstart discussion, 380 families identifies the Missouri pilot and age three identifies the outcome comparison.
  3. For Questions 5–10, distinguish Headstart from Missouri. Both programmes aim to improve early development; neither is described as following children through elementary school or lacking funding.
  4. For Questions 11–13, separate overall results from differences among families. The passage reports similar outcomes across parental risk categories; the separate point about family stress does not establish greater stress in richer families.

Worked review example

Question 5 asks which programme included both poor and wealthy families. Paragraph D describes the Missouri sample, so the programme classification answer is B. For Question 12, paragraph E says the children in the named disadvantaged subgroup performed just as well as their peers, so FALSE fits the statement.

Common mistake to avoid

Do not confuse paragraph letters A–F for Questions 1–4 with programme labels A–D for Questions 5–10.
